Introduction to our discussion

Greetings. Let me introduce the Khalsa Middle School blog from our location in Tucson, Arizona. We are project about youth and race and would be absolutely thrilled if you could join our discussion and answer a question about diversity. Alright, so moving on with the one and only question for today which is… What does diversity mean to you?

As a result lots of brainstorming, we decided that to us it means all of the following and probably more.
  1. Everyone is different
  2. The condition of being different or having differences
  3. Variety of cultures
  4. An instance or point of difference
  5. Celebrating differences
  6. Understanding differences
  7. Accepting differences
  8. Diversity is good for society

  1. Hello, I was part of the brainstorming for diversity, so I entirely agree with what has been said – especially that diversity is good for society. I think that Khalsa is relatively diverse, so going by that I would say that we have a good society.

  2. To me diversity means to be from different cultures,to be different colors, different religions, and of course different personalities. Having said that, I have to agree with what was said on the blog.

  3. To me diversity is to be from different cultures. To me different means to be of different color, different faces; to be inique. We are all from different cultures but we are all human.

  4. Diversity to me has many meanings. Meanings which were invented by humans to categorize other people. It is the human nature. It cannot be suddenly changed. It is a slow and rigorous process. It is not something that happens overnight. It takes time to bypass or change a natural behavior of a species. Its like saying "Why aren't plants purple in my state?" Well, its possible. But it takes many, many years to start a new form of life that is not natural. Just like human behavior. Its hard to change, but it can be done.

  5. i think that diversity means accepting differences in people and having differences in your community. i think it is more than tolerating differences. diversity strengthens the bonds in a community. it proves that no two people have to be the same. we need to celebrate our differences

  14. To answer your question, Noah.I think that by not acting or speaking with raceisim we can pass on the message to others that raceisim is inapropreate for people of all shapes ,colors and ages.

    Diversity
    The real beauty of nature
    Is in diversity,
    Perfectly constructed,
For the entire world to see.

    With one God or many,
    It matters not a lot.
    For one thing without another,
    Neither would be naught.

    Seeing what we look for,
    Makes us feel secure.
    Believing we are better,
    Convinces us we're purer.

    Attempting to define another
    Through our way of seeing,
Says very little of the other
And a lot of who we're being.

When we look at one another,
We'd do well to see -
All of us, as spiritual beings,
    Engrossed in Humanity.

  25. This is Tina. I am proud of our diverse community at Khalsa. Each person in our classroom brings a unique flavor to the school, with all their craziness and beauty, various intelligences and curiosities, sizes and shapes - it wouldn't be what it is without each unique and diverse personality filling the spaces of our classroom.
